This Protestant church was built between 1796 – 1797 and was designed by Carl Langhans Gottard, the architect who also designed the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The exterior of the church is not all that interesting, but the interior must have been simply amazing; a stunning altar, pristine white floors, a majestic organ, two enormous oval balconies, and a wooden baptismal font in the center with a magnificent crystal chandelier hanging over it.
The church has not been used for rites or church services since 1945. When it was built, the land was part of Germany and the people living there were mainly Protestant. When the region was returned to Poland at the end of WWII, the Polish people who came to live there were mostly Catholics. The local residents lost interest in maintaining the building and it gradually started to fall apart.
The building is now almost beyond repair. The tower has disappeared entirely, the floors are gone and the roof actually has more holes than tiles. The cost to repair the roof has been estimated at approximately one million euros. Since no one is willing to pay that price, it is unlikely the church will ever be restored to its former glory.
